(WHAS11) -- The American Red Cross is issuing an emergency call for blood donors.
The Red Cross says they have half as much blood as they did at this time last year and the unseasonably warm weather may have played a role.
The Red Cross is currently 50,000 units of blood short. The need remains so high that the Red Cross has extended blood donation hours.
All blood types are needed, especially O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative.
