RADCLIFF, Ky. (AP) -- The central Kentucky city of Radcliff has joined a growing number of other cities around the state that have approved smoking bans.

The News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown reports the Radcliff City County voted 4-2 on Thursday to approve a ban in most public places.

Councilman J.J. Duvall voted no, saying the ordinance was too restrictive. He had proposed an exemption for charitable gaming events such as bingo.

A previous ordinance was voted down in 2007, but most council members said they were convinced by residents that the ordinance is needed. It will take effect April 1, 2010.

More than a dozen other cities in Kentucky have passed smoking bans.

Has anyone but me noticed that restrictions on individuals increased lately? I don't smoke, but I for one and sick and tired of some governing body passing unnecessary laws that restrict individual rights regardless of the intent. Elizabethtown is considering mandatory smoke detectors in private homes. Of course it is a good idea to have a smoke detector, but come on now. Instead of meeting to determine some new law to pass why not just go to Micky Dee's for a Sundae and save us a lot of unnecessary regulations?
