Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - Parents of Chesterfield Ruby Middle School in North Carolina are in an uproar after the principal gave what was supposed to be a pep talk in groups segregated by race and gender.

The meetings happened just before students were scheduled to take a standardized test. The principal admits to meeting with African-American students as a group, as well as an all-girl group and an all-boy group.

In a letter sent home to the parents, Principal Andrea Hampton said the meetings were designed to help students and "to motivate each group to do their personal best."
