HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) -- A hospital says a pregnant woman and her unborn child have died the day after a 10-car pileup on Interstate 471 in Northern Kentucky.
The Kentucky Enquirer cited a statement from UC Health University Hospital identifying the woman as Lori Howe, 24, of Wilder, Ky.
Lanes of southbound I-471 reopened Thursday evening nearly four hours after the pileup sent eight people to hospitals. The crash occurred at mile marker 0.8 near the 471 interchange with Interstate 275.
The Hamilton County, Ohio, Coroner confirmed her death and identity. The baby was a boy who died in the hospital's emergency department.
Police said the driver of a van on northbound I-471 lost control, crossed the median and smashed into southbound traffic. The van hit two cars before skidding across the roadway.
