LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Thanksgiving came a few days early for residents in the Portland neighborhood.

The Portland Promise Center held its annual Thanksgiving community dinner which provided hot meals for many in the area.

With many of the families unable to afford a Thanksgiving meal, the center says around 300 people turned out for Sunday’s event.

“We have a lot of folks around this time of the year in need. We’re trying to reach out, give a loving fellowship hand to them and provide meals for all of the kids and their families,” Carol Baron of the PPC said.

The Portland Promise Center served up 15 donated turkeys as well as sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and more.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer was also in attendance lending a hand to serve the food.
