LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Two people were arrested on theft charges after witnesses spotted them breaking into cars at Cherokee Park.

It's an area Metro Police say has seen a dramatic rise in car break-ins over the summer.

On Thursday night police arrested both Jordan Cotten and Antonio Goldsberry.

The two were caught red handed in Cherokee Park. That's where police say Jordan Cotten and Antonio Goldsberry were caught breaking into cars. A victim say them break into his car.

"Fortunately the person whose car was broken into was very alert. They were able to get the license plate as well as a description of the vehicle. Officers were able to locate the vehicle a short time later," Sergeant Jamey Schwab, with LMPD, said.

They found them at a BP gas station on Broadway using a stolen credit card to get gas.

The men are behind dozens of car break-ins in the East End over the last several weeks.

"Right now we are thinking anywhere from a 100 to 120 car break-ins are attributed to these two individuals," Schwab said.

The men targeted cars parked in parking lots of gyms, golf courses and parks.

They'd get into cars that were unlocked and if they were locked they would smash the windows and grab everything from iPads, to phones, cash, purses and credit cards.

"What we think a lot of it was they were using the credit cards. They'd take the credit cards to gas stations. They'd usually fill up several cars with several cards," Schwab said.

The rest were either pawned or thrown away.

Police are now looking into whether more people could be involved.
