LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The Louisville Metro Police Department are trying to sort out what sparked a chase that ended with a shoot out near Churchill Downs Tuesday night.

Police said they are not sure what exactly caused one car to begin chasing another, but it all ended in gunfire in the 1600 block Earl Avenue near Churchill downs Tuesday.

One man, described by police to be in his 30s, was shot twice in the chest.  He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

Police said the man was shot after a black vehicle was chasing a maroon car down Earl Avenue when the black ran the maroon car off the road. Witnesses said once the maroon car was off the road, people from the black car grabbed one of the passengers from the maroon car and began beating him, then shot him. The people in the black car then took off.

One man was detained by police. He is being questioned but has yet to be charged.

Police have not announced further information about the people they are looking for.
