LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- One man is dead after his vehicle crashed into a pond just before 4 a.m. in the 5900 block of Bay Harbor Drive in Buechel.

According to police, the driver was driving southbound on Fegenbush Lane when he lost control of his black SUV, broke through a fence and flipped the car into a nearby pond. He was the only one in the car at the time.

Quenise Simon lives across from the pond and says she heard a loud scream moments before she heard a loud crash. The noise woke her up.

“It was loud, and the accident was loud. It sounded like fireworks…it was like boom! Boom! Boom,” Simon said.

Simon says she then called 911 and waited for help to arrive. “Hurry up! That’s all I could say is ‘Hurry up!’ I was devastated. I couldn’t think straight,” Simon said.

Once paramedics and firefighters arrived, the driver, who was the sole person in the SUV, was pulled from the vehicle and CPR was preformed. Police say the driver, who is believed to be a Hispanic male, died on the scene.

“He was in there too long. You knew he wasn’t going to be alive once they pulled him out,” Simon said. The coroner has ruled the cause of death for the driver as drowning.

Marion Hambrick also lives near the crash and says he woke up early Saturday morning to the sound of sirens.

Hambrick watched first responders pull the SUV out of the pond. “When they pulled the SUV out the front of it was pretty mangled,” he said.

Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash
