HODGENVILLE, Ky. (WHAS) – A man is facing serious charges after police say he kidnapped and attempted to rape and kill a 10-year-old girl.
According to police, 28 year-old Jetto Dye tried to rape and murder a 10-year-old girl who was visiting his home on River Road in Larue County with her mother late Saturday night.
According to Trooper Norman Chaffins, the mother of the girl is friends with other family members who live in the same house as Dye. The girl was left at Dye's home where she fell asleep on the couch. Dye allegedly took the sleeping child into a wooded area behind his home.
According to police, when the mother returned the girl was gone and she heard screaming coming from a wooded area behind the house.
“Her screaming got her family’s attention, and that’s what basically saved her life," said Trooper Chaffins. "She fought for her life out there.”
Dye allegedly sexually assaulted the girl in the woods, and according to police tried to choke her to death to get her to stop screaming. Police say the girl then got away from him and he ran deeper into the woods.
It took police nearly two hours to find Dye in the woods. Once police located Dye he refused to cooperate and a K-9 was released on him. Dye suffered a severe bite from the K-9 and had to be taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery on Sunday.
Chaffins says the little girl was treated at a nearby hospital and released.
Ronnie Hardin, a family friend of Dye’s, says he was shocked about the rape and murder allegations. He described Dye as a man who kept to himself.
“He was always quiet and calm. I’m stunned by it,” said Hardin.
Dye is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, attempted rape, and resisting arrest. Trooper Chaffins said Dye may also face additional charges.
