RAMSEY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A North Harrison High School student is dead and another is injured after a car accident near the school.
The Harrison County coroner, Rusty Sizemore, has released the identity of the North Harrison High School student who was killed in the accident as 17-year-old David Austin. Sizemore says Austin's cause of death was from blunt-force trauma.
The driver is in stable condition at University Hospital at this time.
According to Principal Steve Hatton, school had just let out when he received a call about the accident. Hatton says the two boys involved are seniors. According to Hatton the driver lost control of his car when he was headed down West Whiskey Run Road.
“The vehicle rolled several times. It threw the passenger from the vehicle, after paramedics arrived they pronounced the passenger deceased,” Hatton says.
The accident happened just a quarter mile from the high school and has shocked the small community.
“When we all heard it everybody was kind of quiet and hugging each other and crying,” said student Austin Wheatley.
Those who knew the teen killed say he loved sports. He played on both the soccer and baseball teams at the high school.
Principal Hatton says the teen’s death has taken a heavy toll on his students after two other students died in 2011.
“Last year was a tragic time for us and for this to just happen on top of that it's a tough thing for everyone involved,” Hatton said.
Grief counselors will be on hand Wednesday for students.
The airbags deployed normally in the accident. The passenger and driver were also restrained. Swarens Funeral Home is handling the arraignments
