SPENCER CO., Ky. (WHAS11) -- Kentucky State Police continue to investigate after an early morning accident in Spencer County.

The accident happened just after 6 a.m. when police said a pick up truck slammed into the rear of a Ford Mustang which was stopped in the northbound lane of KY 55 waiting to make a left turn on to KY 1633. The Mustang was forced into on coming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac traveling southbound on KY 155.

The driver of the Mustang, 35-year-old Jason Thompson of Mt. Eden, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two children who were passengers in the Mustang and and the driver of the Cadillac, 61-year-old Charles Stiles, were transported to the hospital - the extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The driver of the pick up, 35-year-old Roger Byrd, suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital.

Police said Thompson, the two children and Byrd were not wearing seat belts.  They said it is unclear at this stage of the investigation if Stiles was wearing his seat belt.
