LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The attorney for University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino wants to quash a subpoena from the woman accused of trying to extort his client.
Steve Pence filed a motion Friday asking U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson to throw out the subpoena from Karen Cunagin Sypher, saying anything he knows about the case is protected by attorney-client privilege. Pence's motion does not say why his testimony was being sought.
Sypher has pleaded not guilty to extortion, retaliating against a witness and lying to the FBI. She is accused of demanding college tuition for her children, her house to be paid off and $10 million from Pitino. Opening statements are scheduled for Monday in Louisville.
A jury of eight men and eight women will hear the case. Four jurors will be excused as alternates before deliberations.
