LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)—The Cardinal’s men’s basketball head coach is keeping up with a side hobby: horse racing.

Rick Pitino was part owner of ‘Goldencents’ in the 2013 Kentucky Derby, but this time he has his first Kentucky Oaks horse.

Pitino just became part of the ownership group a few days ago, the same ownership of ‘Goldencents.’

The filly’s name is ‘Empress of Midway’ and be being trained by Doug O’Neill.

Pitino was on the backside of Churchill Downs on Friday morning before heading out for a weekend of recruiting.

He said he didn’t take it too seriously and was a gracious loser with his horses, but he admires the trainers and others that was around the clock putting hard work into the horses.

‘Empress of Midway’ was an “also eligible” as of yesterday, but Todd Pletcher had to scratch ‘In Tune’  because of a sore shin, opening the spot for Pitino’s horse.
