LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The winter woes continue for many across the Kentuckiana area and this time, a frozen water pipe forced students to evacuate a University of Louisville dorm Tuesday night.
More than 100 students that live in the Bettie Johnson residence hall were out in the cold after a water pipe in the laundry room began leaking.
University spokesperson, Mark Hebert, said crews shut off water to the dorm around 11 p.m. and, mostly, it affected students that live on the first floor.
Hebert said the pipe feeds the sprinkler system and it was unsafe to allow students to stay in the building without the sprinkler system working properly.
"There was one sprinkler head that sticks outside the dormitory, and the pipe to that sprinkler head is what froze and burst and affected the entire system," Hebert said.
The university made arrangements to move the students into two hotels near the Belknap Campus if needed.
The university was able to have repairs completed by 2 a.m. Wednesday and students were allowed back in to the dormitory.
