(WHAS11) -- Kentucky Senator Rand Paul speaking out about same sex marriage as the Supreme Court prepares to hear two cases about the controversial issue.
"I do believe in traditional marriage. Kentucky has decided it and I don't think the federal government should tell us otherwise. There are states that have decided in the opposite fashion and I don't think the federal government should tell anybody or any state government how they should decide this," Paul said.
This week the High Court will hear gay marriage arguments for the first time ever.
Tuesday the Court will take up California's Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage five years ago. Wednesday, it will hear a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act which states the federal government can't recognize same sex marriages.
One of the biggest issues facing the Justices is whether they can or should issue a ruling to broaden the legal definition of marriage.
