(WHAS11) -- A North Carolina mom and her 9-year-old son are speaking out after they said school officials won't let the boy bring a "My Little Pony" backpack to school.

The school asked Grayson Bruce to leave the bag at home because it became a distraction and is a "trigger for bullying."

Grayson said he has experienced some bullying - he said he was shoved around by others who think his favorite toy is only for girls.

"They are taking it a little too far, with punching me, pushing me down, calling me horrible names and stuff that really shouldn't happen," Grayson said.

The school said it takes bullying very seriously and have taken steps to address the situation.
