LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A new martial arts studio is open on Taylorsville Road and instructors hit the mats Saturday to teach children how to protect themselves from bullies.

"I don't ever want to see a child hurt and I don't ever want to see a child in a situation where they don't know how to take care of themselves, " instructor Nikolas Mayhew said.

Pro Martial Arts celebrated its grand opening with a class that teaches kids how to protect themselves physically, and much more importantly, it teaches them how to be mentally prepared.

"We teach them to go to mom or dad or a very trusted adult, that it's always OK to tell, no matter what, that we always should tell. And, that no matter what, it's not your fault. You need to be able to deal with this," Nikolas Mayhew said.

Amanda Mayhew said she brought her daughter to class to help her grow into a strong confident young lady.

"She seemed to enjoy it and I thought, great. I want her to be able to have that physical confidence and be able to be strong and healthy," Amanda Mayhew said.

The studio also offers classes for adults, as well as fitness and self-defense classes.
