FORT KNOX, Ky. - (WHAS11) - Fort Knox officials continue to investigate after a female cadet was struck by lightning during training exercises.

The cadet arrived at University hospital Tuesday night, but prior to her arrival, Fort Knox officials say the cadet was taken by an on-site medical vehicle to Fort Knox's Ireland Army Community Hospital.

The cadet and others in her training company were doing field training exercises at the northern end of Fort Knox when a pop-up storm halted the workout.

While it's still unclear when the strike took place, officials say they acted fast in giving the cadet immediate care.

Officials say the Leader's Training Course the cadet was participating in is designed to qualify college students without ROTC experience for the advanced senior ROTC program on their campuses.

In all, more than 1,400 men and women in seven groups are going through the course, but the condition of one cadet in particular is on the mind of those involved in the program. This statement comes from the senior commander of the Leader¹s Training Course.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the cadet and her family,” said Col. David Hubner.

Army officials tell WHAS 11 the cadet’s family is with her at University Hospital, but no other details are being released right now about the incident.
