LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – Kosair Children’s Hospital in downtown Louisville has roughly 35,000 emergency room cases a year.
To ease the pain, they’re opening a brand new medical center in the East End in about two weeks.
WHAS11’s Gene Kang shares why it’s just for kids.
Everything about the new Kosair Children’s Medical Center’s Brownsboro campus is kid-friendly, starting with the four-foot door, especially for kids.
The $50 million project is preparing ready for a grand opening on May 26th.
Local Kentucky artists added color to the entrance, seen throughout the building.
The campus is located at 4910 Chamberlain Lane, near the Norton Brownsboro Hospital. It will serve Kentucky and southern Indiana.
“It’s a full-service laboratory,” said Charlotte Ipsan, the on-site administrator.
There’s state-of-the-art equipment for diagnostics and even kid-friendly machines for MRI, X-ray and CT scans, with an added touch. There’s a galaxy above that you can see if you’re laying down. It was chosen by kids.
The 64-size CT scanner allows for quicker images because it’s state-of-the-art. Ipsan also said that it’s whisper-quiet and gives off less radiation to children.
The center has emergency room services and outpatient surgery housed in more than 58,000 square feet of airy, comfortable space. There are 140 doctors, nurses and medical experts on staff to care for Kentuckiana’s youngest patients.
Tom Kmetz is the President Kosair Children’s Hospital.
“Some of our kids are finding their way to adult-oriented facilities in the East End of Louisville,” Kmetz said. “We want to make sure they have access to Kosair Children’s Hospital.”
Lynnie Meyer, the Chief Development Officer for Norton Healthcare spoke for the employees.
“As an employee, I’m very proud to develop this project but as a parent, I’m equally as proud to know there’s another safe alternative to bring my children,” she said.
And designers are also proud. The outside of the building is kid-friendly and almost looks like an amusement park with a playground. It’s also environmentally-friendly and LEED certified, meaning it’s green.
