(WHAS11) – An online petition that was created after a nine-year-old boy with autism was stuffed into a bag at his Central Kentucky school for acting up is gaining national attention.

Sandra Baker says her son Chris was put in a duffle bag by his teachers at Mercer County Intermediate School. The teachers say it was a form of therapy.

State education officials say they are now investigating.

Since this story hit the national news outlets, an 18-year-old girl who also has autism has started a petition asking the school district to fire the teachers involved.

In part, the petition's author writes, "This is a reflection of a nationwide lack of adequate, accurate, and appropriate information for all teachers about how to interact respectfully, meaningfully, and appropriately with Autistic students."

In a little more than 24 hours, more than 11,000 people have signed the petition.

You can view the petition here.
