(ABC NEWS) -- All over the State University of New York campus near Rochester people are paying tribute to the life to the life of Alexandra Kogut. She was a Freshman, who had only been on campus for a month when police say boyfriend Clayton Whittemore, 21, allegedly brutally beat her inside her dorm room.

Kogut and Whittemore went to the same high school in central New York and based on twitter messages, both were very excited about his latest visit this past weekend

After a playful back and forth about food he was going to bring her, she tweeted, "ahhhh see you soon!! :)"

But it's her final two-word message that police now find so cryptic. At 12:13 a.m. Saturday she simply tweeted "should've known."

Authorities believe shortly after that, Whittemore killed the freshman.

"The victim's mother contacted our university police and showed concern for her daughter so the university police went to the room and found the body," said David Mihalyov, Chief Communications Officer with SUNY Brockport.

Around 4 a.m. about 100 miles away at a rest stop, police arrested Whittemore, a student at Utica College and a standout hockey player, who was featured as "athlete of the week" back in 2010 on WKTV.

According to the criminal complaint, Whittemore initially admitted to intentionally killing his girlfriend, but did not give a motive. Then on Saturday he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
