(WHAS11) -- The state that gave us the very tan personalities on the Jersey Shore now has a new law that puts an age requirement on using tanning salons.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has signed a bill into law banning children under the age of 17 from using commercial tanning beds even if they have parental consent.

This comes after the so called "tanning mom" made national headlines who's accused of taking her 5-year-old to a tanning salon.

Business owners say the new law will make them lose business especially since it's now prom season.

Under the law, children 17 and older must have a parent or guardian present in order to get a consultation with a tanning salon.

It also bans anyone younger than 14 from getting a salon spray tan.
