NEW HAMPSHIRE -- A New Hampshire girl  just under two-years-old is recovering after a pencil pierced her skull, sinking 4 inches into her brain.

At first, Olivia Smith's mother said she couldn't tell what was wrong.

"I didn't say anything, but I remember my 3-year-old saying, 'the pencil is in her head’," mother Susie Smith said. "And I said, 'no, it's not.' So I looked on the floor and there was only a little bit outside of her eye.”

Turns out, Olivia had fallen while coloring with new pencils. A helicopter flew her to a hospital where she underwent surgery to remove the pencil. Doctors said she was lucky the pencil didn't injure her optic nerve.

The ordeal caused Olivia to suffer three strokes, leaving her right side motionless, but even that couldn't slow her down.

"All of a sudden, she moved her right hand all the way up -- shaking, shaking, just like that -- and she started drinking," Smith said.

Olivia's family said they are grateful for the emergency workers and doctors that helped her little girl make a full recovery.
