A North Carolina teacher is in hot water after a comment he wrote on a 6th grade student's assignment.

It said, “minus twenty percent for being a loser."

Rex Roland has said he was only joking when he wrote the word ‘loser’ on the middle schooler's paper but the student's mother doesn't find it funny. She says it sends the wrong message.

"Suspend him. Make him think about what he has done.  This is telling her that 'you're a loser. You're not gonna go anywhere," said Patty Clement.

The girl was removed from Roland’s class and the teacher has apologized.

The school district will only say it's a personal matter that's being looked into.
