GRANGER, Ind. (AP) -- Northern Indiana authorities say they may never know the circumstances that led to a 55-year-old man and his 18-month-old granddaughter drowning in a family pool.
St. Joseph County Police Lt. Matt Blank tells the South Bend Tribune that David Prentkowski took Charlotte Chelminiac out for a walk about 7 p.m. Thursday night in the neighborhood in Granger, northeast of South Bend. When they didn't return about 30 minutes later, a son went looking for them and found them submerged in the pool.
Blank says after an autopsy their deaths have preliminarily been ruled accidental drownings. Blank says police are looking into whether Prentkowski's medical issues may have played a role. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October.
