LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Jefferson County Public Schools board has voted to close Myers Middle School and repurpose the location for other use.
According to their proposal, the school will be used for early childhood, alternative education and English learning programs.
6th grade students who are attending Myers Middle in the 2014-2015 school year will be placed in one of 10 middle schools including The Academy @ Shawnee, Carrithers, Highland, Meyzeek, Newburg, Noe, Ramsey, Thomas Jefferson, Western and Westport Middle Schools.
Students currently enrolled will finish their 7th and 8th grade years at Waggener High School.
Those who are impacted by the changes will have the opportunity to transfer to other schools in the area.
Several board members voiced their concern for making the decision so late in the year, and hope they can figure out the district made mistakes.
"We still do not have a diagnosis about why Myers has failed,” David Jones, a JCPS board member said. “We have lots of data, but at a really fundamental level I can't say well Myers didn't turn around because of X or Y or Z."
JCPS plans to announce specific plans for the Myers Middle School building in June.
