(WHAS11) -- Don't forget about your pets this Fourth of July! Do them a favor and leave them at home where they will be safe and secure.

Authorities with Louisville Metro Animal Services and the Kentucky Humane Society say the Fourth of July is the number one day of the year for pets escaping and getting lost because of the loud noise that scares them.

LMAS strongly suggests leaving your pets at home because of the risk of losing them and also because the festive foods and products can be potentially harmful to your pets. If you do take your dog out with you, be sure to have proper identification on his collar in case they do get loose.

Even unused fireworks can be toxic because they contain substances like arsenic, potassium nitrate and other harmful metals.
