LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Before teens stormed their way into Bader’s Food Mart, stealing items and attacking the clerk, the first reported assault by the group happened at Waterfront Park.

The 13-year-old victim claims her side of this started when a group of young girls noticed her shoes.

"She was like, 'Ooo, I like those, I want those.  And then, out of nowhere, she come up behind me and start pulling my hair and beating me," she said.

The young teen claims four other girls joined in – pulling her hair and kicking her in the face.

"I couldn't believe it was happening.  I didn't know people did that,” she said. "They ripped off my purse and my phone was in my purse."

The attack did not last long. The young girl's mom says some teen boys were recording the girls assaulting her daughter when an employee at the nearby Tumbleweed saw what was happening and tried to stop the assault.

"This is what the officer told us.  He had just got off work.  He was taking a stroll and happened to see them jumping on her.  And ran over there to pull her, him, those girls off of her.  In the midst of that, the boys who were recording her jumped on him.  And they beat him so bad that they had to put him in the hospital," the teen’s mother said.

Staff at the Tumbleweed tells WHAS11 that he’s still at the hospital recovering.  The young girl does not remember this man coming to help her because the moment the girls got off her, she ran.

"She had knots on her head.  Her face was swollen," the mother said.

The young girl's family wants to find the man who saved their daughter.

"We just really really really do want to say thank you and that we appreciate it," she said.

The teens' parents also hope the parents of kids who assaulted their daughter and caused all the problems downtown to take control of their households and punish their children.

"It all goes back to that old saying, 'It takes a village to raise a family.'  I want to be part of that village, but I need other people to help."
