MILTON, Ky. (AP) -- Highway officials in Kentucky and Indiana say the Ohio River bridge between Milton, Ky., and Madison, Ind., will remain closed until mid-April.
A maneuver to slide a new bridge into place on permanent piers is scheduled to take place the week of April 6, but preparation work for the slide is continuing.
A steel bearing dislodged March 11, and during the past weekend, crews finished jacking up the bridge and replacing the bearing.
Transportation officials in the two states say while U.S. 421 is closed between Madison and Milton, detours will remain in effect. A ferry is providing transportation across the river for emergency vehicles.
The agencies say the nearly half-mile Milton-Madison Bridge is believed to be the longest steel truss to be slid laterally into place in North America.
