MADISON, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Dozens of people gathered to watch part of the Milton-Madison Bridge explode.
A massive boom. You could feel the vibrations yards away.
Workers used explosives to demolish one end of the Milton-Madison Bridge.
About 100 people gathered to watch the so-called festivities.
"I just think everybody likes to see something blown up. That's the reason I'm here. I want to see it blown up," resident Robert Stewart said.
Ken Campbell said, "The bridge is a big deal for Madison. A lot of people go across the river."
About 150 feet on both sides of the bridge were removed. The approach ramps were taken down during phase one.
Cars will be able to cross when it reopens Sunday at midnight. In several months, phase two will replace the bridge in sections with the largest truss slide in the country.
Instead of shutting it down for a whole year, it will be closed off again twice - five days at a time.
"The whole process will take about another year or so. There is a span on the Kentucky side that is being built and that span will be floated out into place and lifted in top of temporary towers," project manager Aaron Stover said.
