LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Memorial Day weekend gives Americans, nationwide, a few days of relaxation and outdoor fun. It is also important to remember the reason we celebrate this holiday weekend.

"If you've never really thought about it... Veterans Day in November is to honor for everyone who has served and we thank you all for that.  No matter what you did,” Normal Pender, the son of a multi-war veteran said. “Memorial day... is for people who gave the ultimate sacrifice."

Many people spend a small amount of their weekend visiting war memorial burial grounds to honor our nation’s fallen soldiers. WHAS 11 visited the Clarksville War Memorial to find a smaller crowd than usual.

Regardless of the turnout, many people still find ways to pay their respects to those who gave their lives for our country’s freedom.

"If you're having a Memorial Day cookout today, take a minute and just stop you know, just to think. You don't have to come here," Pender said.
