OAK BROOK, Ill. (AP) -- The CEO of McDonald's has been responding today to a growing chorus of critics on issues including worker pay, marketing to children and animal rights.

At the company's shareholders meeting near Chicago, Don Thompson stressed that McDonald's has a history of providing job opportunities -- and that it pays "fair and competitive wages."

He said the company isn't predatory, or focused on marketing to children. Yesterday, the company closed one of its headquarters buildings, where hundreds of protesters had planned to demonstrate over low wages paid to workers.
