Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - Senator Mitch McConnell and his democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes are in the midst of what some are calling the debate over the debate.

One day after Grimes rejected several key conditions in McConnell's debate proposal, McConnell told WHAS11 that he is sticking to his guns.

Mcconnell wanted a Lincoln-Douglas style debate with only the candidates asking each other the questions, with no notes and a timekeeper the only other person involved.

Grimes wants an audience to ask questions.

Mcconnell has proposed three debates, all to happen by Labor Day.

Grimes said they should debate closer to the November election and has accepted an invitation to appear on Kentucky Educational Television in October.
