(WHAS11) -- The family of Andre Ballard, 43, is devastated and many in the community are outraged after Ballard was shot leaving work Sunday. A vigil was held Tuesday night at 10th and Broadway in front of his workplace, Indi’s Fast Food Restaurant.
Family says the good, hardworking father died at University Hospital. The Homicide Unit is investigating how Ballard became an innocent victim. Ballard was on his way home, waiting at a bus stop at 11th and Chestnut Sunday night when detectives say someone attacked him, and shot him in the stomach.
"I think it's ridiculous to think that people actually want to kill someone over a cell phone and a wallet. Get a job," said Rana Rhodes, an Indi's Fast Food customer.
“For somebody to kill my cousin when he was just minding his own business to take care of his family, that is not right and I want someone to come forward," said Ballard's cousin Annice Graves.
"We are hurting so bad right now because he's a good man. There's no other way of putting it," said Revondia Beason, another cousin.
Ballard, father to seven children ages two to 27-years-old somehow stumbled back to Indi's for help and collapsed outside.
His family says he went in early that day, stayed late and had worked at Indi's for eight years. Many in the community say they want justice for the family.
"He's supporting his family and doing what we asked him to do and he dies like this, it's not right, it's not right," said Indi’s Fast Food customer, Deborah Phillips.
The gunman who shot and killed Ballard is still on the run.
