BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (WHAS11)—A 22-year-old man was attacked by coyotes while walking to work on Monday morning.
Andrew Dickehage obtained bite wounds and scratches after three coyotes attacked him.
“Before I could get the flashlight at the brush,” Dickehage said. “It was already coming at me. I couldn't get this one to let go and it started to tug on my hand and I felt it starting to tear through my skin."
A chose to walk to work after his car broke down, Dickehage said that he could barely see as they lunged at him for more than a minute.
"I took my flashlight and I hit it over the head to get it to let go,” Dickehage said. “Well, as soon as I got it to let go another one went to lunge at me and all I really thought to do was just to swing and to knock it."
Wildlife officials said they have never had reports of a grown man being attacked by coyotes before.
“We need to be aware that our coyotes are really comfortable with people to the point that we need to do something to change our behavior in order to get them back to natural normal fear of people," Jennifer Churchill said, with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Officials say they have killed two of the three animals so far and are currently tracking the third.
After the attack, Dickehage said he will be getting a ride to work from now on.
Dickehage has been given rabies shots and others. He said he was thinking about his son and fiancé during the attack.
