HOBART, Ind. (AP) -- Police say a man fatally shot himself after he and others chased from an armed home robbery crashed in a busy northwestern Indiana commercial area, with two men running through restaurants in an attempt to escape.

Hobart Police Chief Jeff White says a car carrying the men crashed Wednesday evening near the Westfield Southlake mall. The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report that an officer caught one man while three others fled.

Police say one man fired shots at a pursuing officer before killing himself. Two others were caught after fleeing through restaurants and shooting at a pickup truck driver following them, wounding him in the hand.

Porter County police say a woman reported that the men broke into her home near Valparaiso and stole cash and guns.
