CLEVELAND (AP) -- A man accused of keeping three women captive in his Cleveland home for a decade, beating them, and raping them repeatedly is waiting to be sentenced after pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty.

Fifty-three-year-old Ariel Castro is scheduled to appear next week for sentencing. The former school bus driver pleaded guilty Friday to 937 counts in a deal that sends him to prison for life without parole, plus 1,000 years. The judge set Castro's sentencing hearing for Thursday.

Castro had been awaiting trial on charges including that he repeatedly restrained the women and punched and starved one woman until she had a miscarriage.

The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were in their teens or early 20s. They escaped from Castro's home May 6.
