(WHAS11) -- Louisville Water Company and Metropolitan Sewer District announced Tuesday they are merging.
Mayor Greg Fischer says the ultimate goal is to deliver stronger, leaner and more efficient public utilities.
Fischer appointed the public utilities task force in January. The group found that the consolidation could save $24 million.
The process could take four to five years but there will be no interruption in service.
Fischer says no layoffs are planned.
