LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Kim Cardeiro won the pentathlon to lead the University of Louisville’s two track and field athletes on the final day of the Hoosier Open, held in the Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind.
Cardeiro scored wins in four different events to come away with a first-place total of 3,445 points. Teammate and freshman Brianne Brown made her collegiate debut and notched a sixth-place finish.
“We were all excited about Kim,” assistant coach Joe Walker Jr. said. “She has been one of the hardest workers in practice and it was good to see her get rewarded.
“This was her first collegiate victory, so she was excited about that personally. I’m excited, though, to see what she can do the rest of the indoor season.”
A Falmouth, Mass., native, Cardeiro began the day with a third-place showing in the 60m hurdles before recording her first victory of the morning, taking the high jump title. She cleared the bar at 1.62m/5-3.75 for 759 points.
After placing sixth in the shot put, Cardeiro led a 1-2 Louisville finish in the long jump. Her mark of 5.53m/18-1.75 was good enough for first and 709 points. Brown had a runner-up mark with a leap of 5.47m/17-11.50.
Cardeiro then went on to win the final event of the day, the 800m, for her first career pentathlon victory.
