SHELBY CO., Ky. (WHAS11) -- Another step was taken on Thursday to keep up with the global demand of Kentucky's bourbon industry with a groundbreaking for a distillery in Shelby County.
It is a $115 million investment from one of the fastest growing brands of bourbon and plenty of folks were getting into the spirit of bourbon.
Three hundred acres in Shelby County will be transformed into a distillery for making bourbon in two years from now.
Tom Bulleitt, a former Lexington lawyer, founded the brand more than 20 years ago.
Bulleitt is the flagship bourbon for the London based company, Diageo. The distillery will distill not just Bulleitt but other Diageo brands as well.
Governor Beshear thanked Diageo for coming and said Diageo could have built this facility anywhere but chose Shelby County.
Ninty-five percent of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky.
This new facility when it's up and running in late 2016 will be ready to produce 1.8 million proof gallons a year.
