SAN ANTONIO (KENS5) -- A 14-year-old boy says it was an accident, but police are still investigating the details surrounding a fatal shooting in east San Antonio.
Investigators said the teen shot his 12-year-old cousin, Julian Karnazuta-Gomez, in the head while they were toying with a gun in an upstairs bedroom. The question that officers are now trying to answer is how the boy got his hands on the firearm.
San Antonio police said the 14-year-old boy claimed to have found the weapon in a ditch near a school earlier in the evening. He told police he was showing the gun to his cousins when it went off.
The young victim was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition and died shortly there after.
As for the teenager, police are still questioning him and the two other kids who witnessed the accident. Two adults were also home at the time of the shooting but were in a different room; they are also being questioned, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
Police said the investigation is on going but that it doesn't appear any charges will be filed against the teen boy. According to SAPD, the most important detail is trying to determine exactly where the gun came from.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Thursday, at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of East Houston St., near South W.W. White Road.
