(WHAS11) -- WHAS11 has learned a dozen Kentucky schools will be receiving federal money to help improve student achievement.

Seven Jefferson County Public Schools are included: Doss, Fairdale, Iroquois, Seneca, Southern, and Waggener high schools, as well as Knight Middle School, are among those eligible for a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

These schools have already gotten more than $10 million in federal money as part of a turnaround effort. The new grant would help train teachers in hopes of boosting student achievement.

Education Commissioner Terry Holliday said all seven of those JCPS schools could be taken over by the state if they don't improve by this spring.
