LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Servicemen and women has sacrificed so much for the good of the nation. Many of those families are in need of a little help this year, most being from the Kentuckiana area.

There are those special individuals who are saving graces and some may call them “Christmas Angels” because they make sure those families are honored during the time of giving.

Whether it is life threatening situations, long deployments away from home or an uncertain job market in the civilian world, these are some of the examples of sacrifices military families make.

“It gets tough around the holidays when you don’t have steady income coming in,” Kentucky National Guard member David Gurule said. “It’s been kind of tough but I think we are managing.

Gurule has been in the military for 10 years and a Kentucky National Guard member for 5. He’s served in Afghanistan and is now home with his family. For him, finding solid work has not been easy.

“A lot of employees don’t want to hire them; they feel bad about it,” Michael Morgan of Service for Peace said. “But they might have to go through some training for a few months and have to be out from work. Sometimes an employer will look the other way and hire someone else instead.”

Service for Peace has teamed up with Wal-Mart, Kentucky National Guard and several other groups to brighten up this holiday season for national guard families in need.

Around 450 Kentucky National Guard families will be receiving help this year getting food packages, gift cards or toys.

I’m [at] a loss for words. I’m speechless right now and I’m just so tickled,” Gurule’s wife Dana said. “And to be married to a military member is just amazing.”
