HODGENVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- The mother of a suspect who was fatally shot by police in LaRue County has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff's department, a deputy and the county government.
In the lawsuit, Carolyn Chaudoin says Deputy James Williamson used excessive force and displayed negligence when he fatally shot 38-year-old Thomas Earl Ferguson in December.
A grand jury cleared Williamson of criminal charges in the case. Police say Williamson tried to stop Ferguson for reckless driving, but he ignored the deputy's signals and eventually spun out.
The deputy began to approach the other car on foot. Police have said that Williamson fired at Ferguson when he began accelerating toward him.
LaRue County Sheriff Merle Edlin referred questions to Elizabethtown attorney R. Keith Bond, who did not return calls Wednesday seeking comment.
