LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Since 1994, the American Legion Shawnee Post has awarded a policeman and firemen awards for the year.

In 2010, they added EMS and Corrections officers.

A special ceremony was held on Main Street in the Portland neighborhood where 4 members of the police, fire, EMS and Metro Corrections were honored for their service to the community.

Those who were recognized were Captain Steve Suratt from Louisville Metro Fire Department, Officer Todd Linder from Louisville Metro Police, Don Scheer from Louisville EMS and Sergeant Darren Gibson from Metro Corrections.

“We send an e-mail out to all the supervisors and ask to nominate someone that you think is worthy and done a really good job this year and that’s how that person is selected,” Maj. William Ashby said.

Each law enforcement and medical agency has their own selection process on how an honoree is selected.
