LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A sad day for firefighters in Kentuckiana as they paid their respects and said good-bye to one of their own.
Lake Dreamland fire chief John Wilkinson was laid to rest Tuesday.
Wilkinson, a third generation firefighter with the Lake Dreamland department, died last week after suffering a heart attack. He is survived by his wife Jennifer, a daughter, Shianne, and his mother Nancy.
Wilkinson grandfather was killed in 1950 in the line of duty. His father served as chief until his retirement in October 2010, that's when Wilkinson advanced to chief.
Besides his role as chief, Wilkinson also served as assistant chief of the Kentucky Air National Guard Fire & Rescue since 1989.
Wilkinson was just 44 years old.
