LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- Police Officers from the 1st Division LMPD spent part of their morning taking meals to families in the Portland neighborhood.

The officers distributed nearly 100 meals.

It's the third year for the Thanksgiving Outreach, but it was the first year officers got to choose who they helped.

"They don't have 30 dollars to spend on a turkey," said Officer Christina Beaven.  "[That money] might be what they have that week for food alone."

Officer Beaven has built solid relationships with many of the struggling families she's sworn to serve and protect. That's one reason this outreach program is so important to her.

"It feels so good to step in and help them," she said.

Kentucky Harvest donated the turkeys and side items. Volunteers from the Portland Auxiliary and Kentucky Harvest helped with the packaging and loading of the meals.

Officer Beaven is also working on a project to get Christmas presents for kids in the Russell neighborhood. For information on getting involved, email her at cbbcmb@yahoo.com
