LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- (WHAS11) – It’s a bizarre case for Louisville investigators; they say Joseph Lee Duncan, 54, strangled a woman and left her in a friend’s bed.

Terry Crumpton, Duncan’s friend, is still in disbelief and he said the victim was Duncan's girlfriend.

"We found her dead Friday morning," Crumpton said.

Crumpton said the day before, Duncan asked for help to pick the woman up--who was drunk--from a Save-A-Lot parking lot.

He said he drove his car and they put her in the back seat. The woman and Duncan ended up sleeping on a bed that belonged to Crumpton's sister which was a couple blocks away at the Amity Apartments.

"Louisville Metro 2nd Division officers were dispatched to calls of a corpse inside an apartment of Dixdale Avenue," Dwight Mitchell, LMPD spokesman, said.

The coroner says the woman suffered blunt force trauma.

"If you see 30 police officers over there wouldn't you know something is going down?" asked one neighbor.

Crumpton said he was only acting as a Good Samaritan and was trying to help the woman and his friend. He said when they picked her up she was alive.

A police report stated that Duncan never called 911 throughout the whole ordeal.

"He was talking to her and asked her if she wanted to go to the hospital and stuff and she said no," Crumpton said.

Duncan has a previous criminal record including drug charges dating back to 2010 in Jefferson County.

But Crumpton said he can't understand why his friend is behind bars.

"Very confusing, because I don't know why he's charged with murder," Crumpton said.

Crumpton said police seized his cell phone as well as his sister’s.

Police told WHAS11 that the case is still under investigation and have not indicated if they will be charged.
