LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)— A Lou. man is behind bars after being arrested after a crash and being charged with his seventh DUI early Thursday morning.
LMPD officers were dispatched to Westport Road, near the ramp to I-265, for a call about a vehicle that crashed into a light support pole. They found Travis Ramey, 39, and took him under arrest.
The witness told police that the vehicle was going north on Chamberlain Ln. on the wrong side of the road and ran the red light turning left on Westport Road. The suspect then ran the light at the ramp to I-265, made a U-turn over the median on Westport Road and ran into the light pole.
The witness stopped to check on Ramey in the vehicle, while Ramey pulled the vehicle off of the pole and almost struck the witness while trying to flee. The witness had to jump into the grass to keep from being hit, almost striking the witness' vehicle as he attempted to flee.
When officers found the vehicle, it was still running and in gear. Officers smelled a strong smell of alcohol on Ramey’s breath. Police said the subject was disoriented, had slurred speech, had poor dexterity and was bleeding profusely from the nose.
Police said Ramey stated he had a few drinks. Police said Ramey was belligerent and refused to answer multiple questions from LMPD and EMS.
Ramey was transported to University Hospital for a possible broken nose. His license was suspected for prior DUIs. Police said this is his seventh DUI.
Police said Ramey refused a KSP blood kit, but his blood alcohol content would be available through hospital toxicology records. The vehicle’s insurance was also expired, police said.
Police said while Ramey was at the hospital, he stated he would skip town because he did not want to go to the penitentiary.
Ramey is charged with DUI, operating on a suspended operator’s license, wanton endangerment first degree, failure of owner to maintain required insurance and leaving the scene of an accident.
