LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A congratulatory message to Jessica Green was big words coming from the man who reported ethics violations against her mother Judy, who was a former District 1 councilwoman.
Ray Barker challenged Judy Green and current Councilwoman Attica Scott for the District 1 seat and lost both times but now he’s on Jessica’s team.
“When Miss Jessica reached out to me to be involved in her campaign, I was honored and proud to be,” Barker said.
After primary elections Tuesday night, Jessica invited all of District 1 to her home for an election party, celebrating a victory over Attica Scott by 311 votes.
Green says she’s ready to tackle issues like crime and vacant housing. She’s ready to replace Scott, who was known as a very visible, outspoken leader but this victory, although slim, could be an indication voters wanted change.
Councilwoman Attica Scott released a statement Wednesday congratulating Green and thanking those who helped her campaign. She said: “I will leave office in December knowing that I helped to bring respectability to our office, that I asked tough questions when no one else was asking those questions, and that I engaged folks whose names you may not know, but who matter, nonetheless. I could have played a political game of stroking the right egos or remaining silent in the face of injustice, but that is not me.”
Barker feels like District 1 needs a louder voice.
“A great leader knows how to unite a community. Jessica is going to unite the community again. One of District 1’s biggest issues – a bleak economy in need of strong economic development,” he said.
Barker says he and Judy Green did reconcile before her death. He says he thinks many have the wrong idea about Green and that Jessica, like her mother, will be a relentless leader for the district.
